She used her inheritance to build Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, which grew into one of the Islamic world’s most enduring centres of learning.

INSPIRING WOMEN

In the ninth century, a woman chose to transform her wealth into something that would benefit others. She built a mosque for worship, and over time it became a gathering place for scholars and students of knowledge.

Her name was Fatima al-Fihri, and the charitable work she began has remained part of the story of Fez for more than a thousand years.

An Inheritance Given a Lasting Purpose

Fatima grew up in a prosperous and devout family that moved from Kairouan to the Moroccan city of Fez. When she inherited wealth from her father, she chose to use it for a project that would serve her community.

She purchased land with her own money and began building Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque in 859. Traditional historical accounts relate that she fasted throughout its construction and offered a prayer of gratitude when the work was completed.

Fatima did not allow her inheritance to become wealth that disappeared; she transformed it into an act of goodness whose impact outlived her.

From a Mosque to a Centre of Learning

Al-Qarawiyyin began as a place of prayer and worship. In time, circles of learning formed within and around the mosque, bringing together scholars and students from different regions.

Across the centuries, it developed into one of the Islamic world’s most enduring centres of knowledge. Religious studies, language and other fields were taught there, allowing the benefit of one woman’s gift to reach countless learners.

She Departed, but Her Good Work Remained

Fatima al-Fihri eventually passed away, but the work she began did not end with her. People continued to worship in the mosque, learn in its circles and pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

Her story reminds us that the value of giving is not measured only by the size of a donation, but also by the lives it touches and the length of time its benefit continues.

A single act of giving can begin in one lifetime and remain present in the lives of generations.

Hürrem Sultan Foundation: Giving Today, Building Tomorrow

At the Hürrem Sultan Foundation, we believe that meaningful giving can do more than meet an immediate need. It can establish a lasting source of benefit for the future.

This belief guides our work in building mosques, supporting Qur’an and educational programmes, and carrying out ongoing charitable projects that protect human dignity and strengthen communities in need.

Help build a mosque or support a Qur’an circle, and leave a legacy that can benefit people for generations.
